Handmade for Arkansas Tornado Relief

rofit benefit Tornado Victims

Handspun Yarn by The Twisted Purl

Tornadoes ripped through Arkansas on April 27th, 2014.  Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighboring cities of Vilonia and Mayflower and all those dealing in the aftermath of this natural disaster.  Blessed my family was spared from the utter, unbelievable amount of destruction this powerful storm caused, this hit too close to home.  My heart is breaking for those affected.

Yesterday, I traveled to Little Rock from Conway, on Interstate 40.  At Mayflower, I drove directly through the devastated path the tornado left.  The massive scale of the scene was too much to take in and the amount of wreckage was unbelievable.  There were RV’s stacked and twisted together, concrete buildings only half standing, and a tremendous amount of indescribable loss.

After seeing everything first hand, I knew I had to help.  There are many ways people of Arkansas are banding together and I’m proud being part of this state.  (We are #ArkanSTRONG)   I’m just one person, one small handmade business, but I know that every bit helps.  The news reported a $10 donation to the American Red Cross can give two blankets to victims.

In the wake of the tornado, not only are people involved, but pets too.  Our local Humane Society has a number of lost, injured, or orphaned pets in need of care and shelter. They are hosting an Arkansas Tornado Pet Relief Effort.  They are raising more funds to help with the surplus of activity they are experiencing.

For the entire month of May, The Twisted Purl will give:

10% of all profits to the American Red Cross

10% of all profits to the Humane Society of Pulaski County

A portion of our gross profits from any purchase from The Twisted Purl Etsy shop,  website store, or from one of our shows this month will be donated to the above charities.

Etsy Make a DifferenceThere are a few other local handmade Etsy shops helping to raise funds for the Humane Society of Pulaski County  as well.  All have agreed to give at least 10% of their May gross profits!

Any purchase from the shops listed on this Facebook Page: Arkansas Strong: Etsy’s Tornado Pet Relief Effort Fundraiser will benefit the Humane Society.I’ll be adding the handspun yarn photographed above and more to my Etsy shop.  There are a few other handmade items, including our felted soaps, available.

By no means do I want to profit from this disaster, just want to help raise extra funds I would not otherwise be able to contribute.  Below are more resources for different ways you can help.

Dazzle Daze is on the Way

It's Fall Y'allIt’s Fall and not even Thanksgiving but at The Twisted Purl Place, aka my home, it’s already beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Christmas Tree with Felted Soap A small tree is up in my living room with new ornaments being added as fast as I can make them.  Felted Soaps are drying under the tree.  I’m singing Christmas Carols as I spin up Christmas themed yarns.

Yep, Dazzle Daze is just around the corner.Dazzle Daze 2013Dazzle Daze is a huge 3 Day shopping extravaganza for an excellent cause.  The event benefits the Conway Regional Women’s Center.  Tickets are only $5 for the event or $25 for the Thursday Girls Night Out Event.  You can buy tickets for Dazzle Daze here.

There are over 85 Dazzle Daze Merchants all with amazing items and lots of goodies.  Each booth will be totally decked out and spreading Christmas cheer and yes my friends, I will be among them.  This is the perfect place to find one of a kind gifts for every person on your holiday list.

Let me be honest here, getting ready for such a big show is a bit overwhelming but immensely rewarding.  As I’ve said often, I ADORE talking to people face to face about my craft and sharing my handmade story.  BUT, the lead up to and preparation for a big show is always a lot.  Three days of shopping means (God willing) the need for enough inventory to sell for three days!  When you are talking all handmade that is a whole lot of work.  In the past I’ve shared a booth, which takes a lot of the pressure off, but this year I fly solo.  So I’m nervous and busy and sleep is not really a necessity, right?

I love to share the steps of the handmade journey with you and this new yarn journey is exploding with Christmas colors and texture.  Here’s the “Basket of Fluff”:Basket of Christmasy FluffAlong with my standard handspun yarn, felted soaps, and other fiber creations for Dazzle Daze I’m making a few ornaments.  That’s the plan for this yarn.  Funky textures and Christmas colors for uniquely handmade ornaments.Sparkly Drum CarderAbove is a photograph of the fiber spinning on the drum carder.  It looked super sparkly (Angelina fiber does that and I love using it).  Below is the picture of the carded batt once it went through the drum carder.Christmasy Carded BattFrom the batt I spun the fiber into yarn with my spinning wheel.Yarn on Spinning WheelBecause I plan to use this skein strictly for Christmas Ornaments I put it directly on my ball winder and skipped the process of putting it on the swift and into a hank of yarn.Christmas Handmade Yarn for Ornaments at Dazzle DazeHere’s the finished yarn.  It turned out pretty spiffy. Below is an example of one of the ornaments I’ve made.Ornament made with Handspun Yarn for Dazzle Daze 2013Want a discount? Indie Fiber Artist Launches Campaign to make Mobile Yarn Studio Reality

Please help make this crazy yarn lady’s dream come true!
My name is Cyndi and I’m a yarnaholic. I’ve been on a mission to fill the world with fun textures and yummy yarn goodness since the start of The Twisted Purl in 2007. It’s time to take the Purl Portable.

We’ve accomplished a few amazing feats together including beating out some of the largest brands in our state and securing the handmade win in the Battle of the Brands competition.

Through my Facebook Page, Instagram, and website I share the entire handmade yarn process. Through photographs you see how the yarn is made from fluff to string. You take part in the yarn’s handmade journey by turning it into something beautiful to be shared for generations to come.

This Fundraiser will enable our Handmade Journey to come directly to you by securing the funds needed to purchase and custom a vintage camper trailer like the 1973 Boler. My dream is to open the doors of our mobile yarn shop and you can come on in to see the yarn, feel the textures, and help to create a special handspun yarn for each and every show we do. Seriously now, how cool would it be to have a mobile yarn shop that can come to your town for you to experience?

The Portable Purl will travel to shows nationwide bringing handmade yarn and fiber creations directly to you. Also, with the help of fantastic local yarn shops, I’d love to set up in their parking lots to have the ultimate handmade yarn trunk show.

Inside the Portable Purl there will be a dedicated area where you can experience the entire handmade process from fluff to string. You will have the option to pick out your very own fluffy fibers and watch as it is turned into yarn through my spinning wheel and leave the shop with your personally created handmade yarn.

My ultimate dream is to purchase THIS ACTUAL TRAILER in the photograph, but there are a few variables that are beyond our control. Once I have the funds to make the offer we hope it will be accepted. BUT if it is not, there are a wide variety of optional vintage campers available in my budgeted price range. The money raised will all go directly into the Portable Purl and make this dream a reality.

The entire process of purchasing and customizing the inside of the shop will be shared through our website and on Facebook.

Handmade is a story that must be told and this mobile trailer will help tell that story while creating new chapters at every stop we make. With your generous donation you become a part of our handmade story too. Your name will be entwined in a commemorative piece that will proudly be displayed inside the mobile shop for all to see.

By donating you get mad props, hugs, eternal gratitude, and the awesome knowledge YOU have helped make this portable handmade yarnmobile come true. Each donation gets you a social media shout out and your name will become a part of our history. The more you donate, you will be rewarded with some of the most popular handmade fiber creations we have, like our Felted Soaps and Wool Felted Dryer Balls and of course yarn. At the $100 level you will get a specially made yarn created to match our new mobile shop.

If you want 100% assurance the new Portable Purl will come to your hometown, donate at the Yarnusmaximus Level. I’ll come to your town, do a mobile yarn show anywhere in the US you like! Let you pick out all the fibers for your very own basket of fluff and turn it into yarn while you chill out on the couch in the new mobile shop. *Continental US only, it’d be pretty hard to get this thing overseas….at first 😉

If you are a Local Yarn Shop making a donation, please let me know where you are so we can put you on our future Trunk Show Yarn Shop Tour. I can’t wait to meet you!!!

I dream big dreams. I reach for the impossible. This is yet another impossible that CAN BE reached, but not without your help! Let’s make this a reality so I can share the passion and love of fiber arts nationwide.
